Keeneland is a National Historic Landmark. Racing enthusiasts from around the world come to this picturesque track in the heart of horse country to watch top Thoroughbreds, trainers, owners, and jockeys vie for a spot in racing history.
Live racing at Keeneland (in April and October) is legendary both for its relaxing and congenial atmosphere and the outstanding quality of competition. Among the 16 stakes races of the spring meet are the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and Central Bank Ashland Stakes, both important Grade I prep races for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, respectively. The fall meet, showcasing six Grade I races including the $1 million Shadwell Turf Mile and Juddmonte Spinster, has served as a launch pad to success in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The daily purse structure at Keeneland is among the highest of any track in North America.
Although best known to the general public for racing, Keeneland is recognized as the world’s foremost Thoroughbred auction company within the equine industry. Keeneland annually hosts three sales with horses of all ages in January, yearlings in September and breeding stock in November.
Equine athletes train at Keeneland year-round on the 11/16-mile main dirt track or the 5/8-mile training track, which has a Polytrack® surface. The library, considered one of the finest Thoroughbred research libraries in the world, is open daily, Monday through Friday (hours vary during live racing).
